My friend told me that his uncle taught him survival skills in Northern Ontario bush, so much so that he says he won't starve in the bush, ever. As there are plenty of plants and roots to eat any time of the year. You don't even have to fish or hunt. And if you saw Northern Ontario bush, it's mostly post-permafrost shallow swamps on the granite bedrock. You'd stave in the city though.
I have a friend in northern ontario -- he traps as a hobby ... he is able to live in the bush ...
The only thing he really needs other than warm clothing ... is bug repellent...
As you will know the bugs are a nightmare... I doubt he goes into the bush in -30C in the winter though... well maybe for short periods...
